Rowland Scherman’s 1960 Cino Photos
<<<Back to The Silent Era – BEFORE DECOR On to Ben Martin’s 1961 Caffe Cino Photos>>>
Photographer ROWLAND SCHERMAN who took THIS famous image of BOB DYLAN, also took THESE priceless photos of the Caffe Cino in 1960.
See an article and a preview of a documentary about ROWLAND SCHERMAN’s magnificent photojournalism here: http://wvpublic.org/post/photojournalist-rowland-scherman-captured-events-shaped-baby-boomer-generation
- These two pictures are of Mister Scherman himself in 1960–the right-hand one is a publicity shot of him as “Billy Donahue,” pop singer. Hear “Billy’s” hit “Oh, Darling” HERE.
- JOE CINO in 1960–Photographer ROWLAND SCHERMAN says: “If I had known the future, I would have kept a camera on him all the time. As it is, I just have the one. But it does help sum him up” The cylinders at the right are the chimes Joe rang before announcing a show. See my mural of him ringing them HERE.
- Unidentified play: LARRY LOONIN writes of these two photos that they might be “newspaper headline shows” which…(ran) for about 10 minutes between the other plays of the evening…I would xerox about five or six copies of a “crazy story” from the Daily News (usually) and hand it out to members of the audience right after the first show of the evening….
- ….Michael O’Donoghue would usually play one of the characters (usually the bad guy) and two or three, sometimes more audience members would play the other characters either saying the lines quoted in the newspaper article or often ad-libbing.” (e-mail Oct. 6, 2009) Larry adds that the pieces were called “Freakouts.”

- Actress SHIRLEY STOLER
- ROWLAND SCHERMAN writes on 7/14/09: “Bottom photo of the girl with the cup is my old Bohemian friend Judy Berkowitz. The architypical Village beatnik .”
