CLARIS and MICHAEL WARREN POWELL on tour in the U.K. in LANFORD WILSON’s Home Free, directed by MARSHALL, 1967. On the same bill, CHARLES STANLEY played Lanford’s The Madness of Lady Bright. Charles took over the role at the Cino on the night NEIL FLANAGAN went to JOE CINO’s funeral. Marshall and Lanford were so impressed, they took Charles to England in the play. Photo by Frazer-Wood.

1967: Someone wheedled LANFORD WILSON, MARSHALL, DAVID STARKWEATHER, me, and RON LINK (with JAYNE HARRIS) to dress up outrageously and camp all over the stage in CLARIS’ The Clown. (Guess how much wheedling it took). MICHAEL WARREN POWELL, creator of our dazzling outfits, was also on hand to provide some actual acting. TOM EYEN expropriated said outfits and dressed dozens of productions in them–until he invented nudity. Photos JAMES D. GOSSAGE.

Carol Nelson, Unidentified, and Steve Nelson as ZITA LITVINAS, LANFORD WILSON, and MARSHALL in my “Angel, Honey, Baby, Darling, Dear,” a play I wrote to amuse Zita, Lanford, and Marshall on New Year’s Eve, 1964, when we were all SO broke and I thought the nicest (and only) gift I could give them was a fantasy of them rich and famous!

CLARIS in front of LANFORD WILSON, ME, and DORIC WILSON before the site of the Caffe Cino, 2008.
I just found your January 2011 message about Claris Nelson and have forwarded it to her.
I was a freshman theatre major at Northwestern in the fall of 1961, where I met Claris Nelson, who has reamined – ever since – unforgettable. I worked with her in summer stock at Eagles Mere the following summer (1962). And I would be so very happy to talk with her again, even if only briefly, via e-mail. If there is any way that this message, and my e-mail address, can be transmitted to her, I will be grateful. I fear she will not remember me (we were in MANDRAGOLA together, maybe that will jog her memory, I played Sirio the servant….and I was in both J.B. and TIGER AT THE GATES that first year. And I directed BALD SOPRANO in Studio Theatre…but that was later. My warm greetings to a unique individual – and wonderful actress – who used to galvanize me in AK’s classes.
Please include an e-mail address when you make a Comment. Thank you.
